The Legon Interdenominational Church (LIC) began in 1978. Until then, residents on the University of Ghana, Legon campus worshipped with the students in the different denominational services on campus. During vacations, however, campus residents were obliged to travel to Accra to attend church. A few Christians on campus thought it would be good to have a worshipping congregation on campus. This congregation would follow a simple liturgy and the emphasis would be the teaching of God’s Word.
Turning this vision into reality, four committed, lay Christians Prof. Kwadzo Senanu (Department of English), Mr. Joshua Kudadjie (Department for the Study of Religions), Dr. Alan Duthie (Department of Linguistics) and Dr. Frederick Phillips (Department of Chemistry) went in groups of two in 1978 to inform Legon residents and invite them to be members of the congregation. The late Rev. Prof. (Emeritus) Kwesi Dickson accepted to be the Pastor as much as his busy schedule permitted. With an initial membership of about twenty, the Legon Residents’ Congregation held its first church service on Good Friday, 1978, in Legon Hall Chapel. Later, the name was changed to the Legon Interdenominational Church. As the church grew to include people from outside campus, it became necessary for the church to acquire its own premises. In 1998, LIC moved to its present location. |
